In commemoration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the federal government has made tomorrow, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday.
A statement written by Mrs. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, states that this is in accordance with the seven days of national mourning that President Bola Tinubu announced on Sunday.
Following President Tinubu’s approval, Interior Minister Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the public holiday on behalf of the federal government.
He said the day off was a sign of respect for the late president’s service to the country, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his lasting legacy in national development and governance.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with honour, integrity, and a steadfast dedication to the advancement and unity of our magnificent country.”
All Nigerians have the chance to consider his life, leadership, and the principles he espoused on this public holiday, the Minister stated.
In keeping with his vision of a successful and united Nigeria, he called on people to use the day to respect the memories of the departed by fostering peace, patriotism, and national togetherness.
The national flags will be flown at half staff for the seven days of mourning beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Earlier, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda confirmed the funeral preparations for the late Nigerian leader, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital.
At a news conference on Monday, the Katsina Governor stated that after consulting with the late president’s family and close associates in London, it has been agreed that Mr Buhari’s remains will arrive in Katsina on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at noon.
He revealed that the late president’s funeral would take place in Daura, his hometown, at 2 p.m. on the same day.
Mr Radda offered heartfelt sympathies on behalf of himself, the state government, and the people of Katsina State to the late President’s family and all Nigerians who are mourning the loss of a national icon.
The remains of the late Nigerian former president will be released after the paperwork was completed, and his remains would be returned to Nigeria.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and the President’s Chief of Staff, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, arrived in London, United Kingdom, on Monday to receive the late former President’s body.
The late Buhari, who was born in Daura, Katsina State, in Nigeria’s North-West zone, previously served as the country’s military leader from January 1984 to August 1985. He was elected in 2015, reelected in 2019, and succeeded by President Bola Tinubu.
