The Federal Government of Nigeria has moved the verification and authentication of academic certificates and credentials fully online through the Federal Ministry of Education’s ESSVerify portal.
The change, announced in April 2026, means applicants no longer need to visit the Ministry’s offices in person for physical verification. The official platform allows users to submit applications, upload supporting documents and track their requests electronically, making the process more convenient and easier to monitor.
How to Verify Academic Certificates Online
To begin the process, applicants should visit the official ESSVerify portal and create an account or log in if they already have one. After selecting the appropriate service, applicants are required to provide the requested personal and academic information and upload the necessary supporting documents.

Applicants who need authentication or evaluation must also arrange for their academic transcripts to be sent directly from their awarding institution’s official email address to the Ministry at ess1@education.gov.ng for verification and processing. The Ministry says applications are now handled electronically, eliminating the need for physical follow-ups.
Process for Foreign Applicants
Foreign applicants and Nigerians using foreign academic qualifications can also use the online system for relevant evaluation and authentication services. The Ministry’s platform is designed to handle the evaluation and authentication of educational qualifications for purposes such as employment, admission and other official requirements.

Applicants should select the service applicable to their situation, provide accurate information and upload the required documents through the portal. Where transcript verification is required, the awarding institution must send the transcript directly through its official channel as instructed by the Ministry.
The move to the ESSVerify portal represents a major change in how academic credential verification is handled in Nigeria. The Federal Ministry of Education said the fully digital process is intended to simplify procedures, improve efficiency, strengthen data integrity and reduce processing delays.
Most importantly, applicants should use the Ministry’s official portal rather than relying on third-party agents or unofficial websites when submitting their academic credential verification requests.
